The only film in history to also star Idina Menzel, Kevin Garnett, and the Weeknd.
Did you know you wanted a movie in which Adam Sandler plays a dirtbag jeweler slinging diamond-encrusted Furbies to Celtics legend Kevin Garnett? No? Well, Uncut Gems is here to change your mind. In the newly released trailer for the upcoming Safdie brothers movie, Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a New York jewelry store owner who gets caught up gambling other peoples’ money. He does all the aforementioned things (dirtbaggery, Furby-slinging) and then some, including getting in a fight with The Weeknd and drawing the ire of everyone in his life, including his partner, played by the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem (Idina Menzel).
In classic Safdie bros. fashion, Uncut Gems looks like an anxious romp in the city, with Howard racing against time and running away from all the people chasing him for cash. Sandler embraces the dark dirtbag within, playing Howard with a menacing expression, baggy leather wares, and absolutely sinister facial hair.
Uncut Gems made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this year, later popping up on the Toronto International Film Festival slate. Critics have heaped it with early praise singling out Josh and Benny Safdie’s singular style and Sandler’s raging performance. “A Sandler/Safdie collaboration should frankly have felt inevitable, but for the fact that (Punch-Drunk Love excepted) Sandler hasn’t frequently leant his celebrity to independent fare,” Vanity Fair critic K. Austin Collins wrote in his review. “It couldn’t have worked out better, in this case.” See for yourself when Uncut Gems hits theaters on December 25.
